Action Groups

The Active Durham Network

The Active Durham Network aims to bring together like minded partners to raise the profile of sport and physical activity, creating a joined up approach by all providers to address local needs.

The intention is to have a more Active Durham, making it easier for local people to take part in sport and physical activity, no matter what age or ability.

The main aims are:

  • To increase the numbers of people taking part in sport and physical activity.
  • To increase the number of volunteers supporting sport and physical activity.
  • To widen access to opportunities for sport and physical activity.
  • To be the driving force to develop a local action plan for sport and physical activity based upon the needs of local communities.

Action Groups

A number of Action Groups are already leading the way to create a more Active Durham. Members include leisure and community facility managers, sports bodies, clubs, colleges and schools. They have joined forces to work towards identifying gaps in local provision, improving promotion on what already exists and to improve communication amongst local providers to avoid duplication of effort.

So far, the Action Groups have also sourced the funding to establish:

  • A new After School Club for primary school children.
  • Holiday activity programmes.
  • Family fun days.
  • Recruitment days for new club members, coaches and volunteers.
  • Contributed to the activities in the Active Durham year of sport and exercise.
  • Adult ‘Bikeability’ Cycling Lessons.
  • A new Running/Cycling Club
  • Partnership activity days/taster sessions.
  • Joint promotional material for clubs.

What’s in it for you?

These groups provide the chance to have a bigger voice, to raise the profile of your sport or physical activity locally and to have the opportunity to attract new people to your club or activity sessions.

It’s your chance to get extra support and advice by sharing the experience and resources of partners and to access funding and training opportunities for your coaches and volunteers. It’s also your chance to have your say in securing the future of local sport.

How can you help?

The Action Groups meet regularly and we want all local providers to be part of this network to ensure that we have a co-ordinated approach to provide quality local sport and physical activity programmes.
